MCP vs. Community Matches

What is the difference in MCP matches and regular community matches?

Here are some responses from our call:

-MCP kids are treated normally

-In Hays, the children really try to hide it if the parents are in prison.

-We allow the children to be part of the school based program so they will fit in, but we then also match them with a high school kid.

-In Cincinnatti, the mentors have been more concerned than the kids. Sometimes the mentors are reluctant to jump in, and are concerned that the parents might be serious criminals.

What has been your experience of the similarities or differences between MCP and other matches?

About the being part of the school based program, many times they are also matched with a community match. That way they actually have two mentors. The school based match helps them overcome some of the strugles of school. It helps them to have someone to look up to in the school. Then thier community match helps them to have a positive role model. Someone that is not part of the criminal cycle. It allows them prove themselves.

Welcome

Across the country, we see the effects incarceration has on families, and especially on children.

This blog was created as a discussion forum for AmeriCorps Members working on mentoring programs for children of incarcerated parents across the country.

It is so valuable to hear about the similarities and differences, successes and challenges, and inspirations and frustrations we have encountered serving children, families, and mentors.

I hope this blog will connect us by providing a space for discussion, questions and answers, and inspiration as we work with a common mission in different programs in different places.
