In our teleconference on Tuesday April 8, we shared some of the rewarding experiences we've had through Amachi. Here are some responses:
-Going to Baptist Churches. Lots of people didn't know about the Amachi program. It has been a good use of time to recruit African American Mentors and tell them how they can be of service.
-Going for the whole spiritual service: showing how much you really care, not just about Amachi, but also the church community.
-Making an appointment before going to the service and getting that "buy-in" from the Pastor, who has then invited congregation members to meet me after the service.
-In match support, it has been great to see the reactions kids have to the events. Especially the Christmas Party and the Spring Talegate Party. At these events you can really see if the matches are good, and more often then not, you see that they want to continue the match.
-We recently did a baseline survey for a girl who has just started meeting with her mentor, we also did surveys for people who have been part of the program for a while, and we could see the change through the difference in TRUST between bigs and littles who had just started the program and kids who have been in it for a while.
-After seven months, I finally did a presentation at one of the larger churches. A lot of people were interested. I have been working in smaller churches, and usually only one or two people have been interested.

Welcome
Across the country, we see the effects incarceration has on families, and especially on children.
This blog was created as a discussion forum for AmeriCorps Members working on mentoring programs for children of incarcerated parents across the country.
It is so valuable to hear about the similarities and differences, successes and challenges, and inspirations and frustrations we have encountered serving children, families, and mentors.
I hope this blog will connect us by providing a space for discussion, questions and answers, and inspiration as we work with a common mission in different programs in different places.

It seems like all of us have done something that has really made a difference in our life. I am looking forward to this positive experience coming to an end but looking back over that last few months and I am pleased to see what a difference I have made and what I have been able to do to make the world better.
