Film and Movie Resources

Hello CHIP Members!

Hope you've had a wonderful first few weeks.

As promised, I've attached a contact list for other CHIP members across the country. Feel free to be in touch with anyone on this list. There's a column so you know who is starting a new (or almost new) program and who is supporting an existing program with some sort of focus on children and families affected by incarceration.

Additionally, Hannah and Stephanie in Chicago were thinking about doing an awareness raising film screening, which prompted me to start thinking about films that might be relevant to your work, or at least be of interest:

-Troop 1500: www.pbs.org/independentlens/troop1500/ (really good)
-Reading Rainbow "Visiting Day": www.reentrymediaoutreach.org/reading.htm (I haven't seen this but the picture book is beautiful)
-Girlhood (www.moxiefirecracker.com/films/girlhood.php) (really good; director Liz Garbus has a number of other films worth watching as well)
-"Champagne" http://www.michaelspornanimation.com/ (Sr. Barbara-Jean, Hartford Site Director Recommends)
-Fighting the Odds: The Marilyn Gambrell Story: www.mylifetime.com/on-tv/movies/fighting-odds-marilyn-gambrell-story (and No More Victims's website: www.nomorevictimsincglobal.org) (I have not seen this)

I will keep thinking about other films that might be good, and I'd welcome any suggestions.

Take care,
Ursula

Welcome

Across the country, we see the effects incarceration has on families, and especially on children.

This blog was created as a discussion forum for AmeriCorps Members working on mentoring programs for children of incarcerated parents across the country.

It is so valuable to hear about the similarities and differences, successes and challenges, and inspirations and frustrations we have encountered serving children, families, and mentors.

I hope this blog will connect us by providing a space for discussion, questions and answers, and inspiration as we work with a common mission in different programs in different places.
