Mentor Recruitment

Happy Friday!

I hope you all are doing wonderfully. I've been getting great updates from you all by phone and email. Keep up the good work, and feel free to call with questions/concerns/good news. A lot of folks are doing a major mentor recruitment so that they will have at least 5 good matches made and meeting by the end of December. So...

Where are you getting your mentors?
Some CHIP members have been successful:
-Networking with AmeriCorps members on and off the team
-Sharing about the program with anyone and everyone
-Recruiting community leaders
-Speaking to fraternities
-Hanging fliers with rip-off tabs in Supermarkets, local businesses, on the street
-Building partnerships with other local mentoring organizations
-Posting on online volunteer sites such as: idealist.org / volunteermatch.org / local orgs

Other Places CHIP Members are trying to get mentors:
-NAACP meetings
-Bar/Restaurant publicity event/info session/ fundraiser
-University/college campus service organizations
-Newspaper publicity about the program

Let us know what works!

National Mentoring Month

I can order materials - check out the website to see if you want any posters, fliers, bookmarks, or cards: http://www.nationalmentoringmonth.org/

Blog
I've tried the blog thing with the past two service groups. It has morphed a couple of times, but it has never taken off. Now members, I've made you all authors, so you should be able to post to the blog. It's public, so anyone can see it, but it is not a search-able blog, so here's the URL: http://childrenofincarcerated.blogspot.com/

Feel free to start a new conversation thread if it's a tool you think you'll like to use to connect with each other and share ideas.

Welcome

Across the country, we see the effects incarceration has on families, and especially on children.

This blog was created as a discussion forum for AmeriCorps Members working on mentoring programs for children of incarcerated parents across the country.

It is so valuable to hear about the similarities and differences, successes and challenges, and inspirations and frustrations we have encountered serving children, families, and mentors.

I hope this blog will connect us by providing a space for discussion, questions and answers, and inspiration as we work with a common mission in different programs in different places.
