Odds and Ends - Resources and Self-care

Hello Everyone!

Lots of odds and ends this week: monthly report, information about Caregiver's Choice, a mentor resource, and a reminder to take care of yourselves.

Monthly Report

Thanks to those of you who have completed your monthly reports. Others, please submit them by this afternoon!

Caregiver's Choice
For those of you who have been submitting children's names.
We got a call this week to say that we're going to have to apply for the grant in EACH state individually. This is a bit frustrating since we've worked for almost a year to put everything in place so our CHIP programs could take advantage of the grant. I know you all have been doing great work to get children enrolled in Caregiver's Choice as well, so sorry for this new glitch. For now, hold off on sending in more child paperwork in, but if you are ready to match a child with a mentor, do it anyway - we can't let this prevent us from matching our children with good mentors.
I'll be contacting all of the site directors individually to talk about applying as an Operating Site (if it will make sense to do). More later!

Mentor Resource
Some mentors are a little nervous for their first few mentor meetings. I've attached a little 2-page cheat-sheet that might help some of your mentors.

Are you stressed? Are you tired? Do you have a lot on your plate?
You are all stellar. You are all important. Make sure to take time for yourself.
Your work may affect you physically, mentally, or emotionally. Sometimes it's inspiring. Sometimes it's taxing. Make time for yourself.

Remember that we as service providers can experience secondary trauma from hearing the experiences of our clients and seeing their daily challenges. Give yourself time.

If you are feeling the beginnings of "burn-out" - talk to your supervisor - talk to your site director - give me a call - write about what you're doing on our blog: http://childrenofincarcerated.blogspot.com (I know, this was probably first on your list of relaxing activities (: ) - but seriously - take some time this week to do something that centers you.

Long distance hugs,

Welcome

Across the country, we see the effects incarceration has on families, and especially on children.

This blog was created as a discussion forum for AmeriCorps Members working on mentoring programs for children of incarcerated parents across the country.

It is so valuable to hear about the similarities and differences, successes and challenges, and inspirations and frustrations we have encountered serving children, families, and mentors.

I hope this blog will connect us by providing a space for discussion, questions and answers, and inspiration as we work with a common mission in different programs in different places.
